The study of the physiology of sense organs and the processing of
the sensory information in the brain is an important part of Neuroscience.
Some of the most significant scientific progress of the last 20 years
has been made in sensory physiology. Much of the knowledge about
the transduction of physical stimuli into electrical impulses has
been gained during that time period as well.
There has not been a large scale reference book providing a complete
overview over the knowledge of Sensory Neuroscience since the 1970s.
The Senses aims to fill that gap. In six volumes, comprehensive information
about what is known of sensory systems on all levels organized by
modality and by level of processing, is collected for each of the
major modalities. The editorial committee represents all senses as
well as all levels of processing and all kinds of animals (invertebrates
to humans). The work is printed in splendid full color, with a multitude
of illustrations.
An advisory board of leading scientists, including Allan Basbaum,
University of California San Francisco, Akimichi Kaneko, Keio University,
Gordon Shepherd, Yale University, and Gerald Westheimer, University
of California, Berkeley helped assemble the editorial board which
comprises the world leaders in their respective subjects.
The Senses is a tour de force, and a unique reference of great importance
to Neuroscience and its neighboring disciplines. It will quickly
become a standard work that will need to be held in every university
library, providing access to tens of thousands of neuroscientists
and students all over the world via the on-line version available.
